Understanding the Differences: Garden Designers, Landscape Architects, and Landscapers

Week 2: Landscape Architects

In our previous blog post, we delved into the world of Garden Designers. If you missed it, you can catch up here. We started by addressing the crucial question: Whom should you hire for your landscaping needs? This week, we'll take a closer look at Landscape Architects.

Plan Ahead. Execute the Plan. See the Results.

Landscape Architects are professionals who possess a degree in landscape architecture and hold a state license to practice. They specialize in planning and designing public outdoor spaces such as city gardens, parks, cemeteries, commercial centers, resorts, transportation facilities, and waterfront developments. They may also be involved in restoring natural areas like wetlands, streams, and forests.

Landscape Architects work with slopes, engineered retaining walls, CAD technical specifications for outdoor structures, and often assist homeowners with navigating the permitting process at the local county and city levels. They can also oversee the bidding process and project management with selected subcontractors on behalf of the clients. For properties over 5 acres, Landscape Architects may refer out to a survey service.

As for costs, fees vary by state, but it's typical to expect to spend between $200.00 to $350.00 per hour for the services of a Landscape Architect, depending on their experience, expertise, and specialty area.

This does not include the cost of additional land studies that may be necessary for significant excavation on slopes, or fees associated with permit applications. Landscape Architects typically bill in 15-minute increments, similar to attorneys, for time spent on projects, client communication via email/phone or in-person meetings, and travel time.
